FAQ
What are the elf on the shelf rules?
The commonly used family rules: don't touch the elf (its magic is fragile), the elf watches during the day and reports to Santa each night, it moves to a new spot every morning, it can't move or talk when watched, and it leaves on Christmas Eve.
When do you start the elf on the shelf in 2026?
Most families start the morning after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov 27, 2026) or on Dec 1. There's no wrong answer; some start the first Sunday of Advent (Nov 29, 2026).
When does the elf leave?
On Christmas Eve, flying back to the North Pole with Santa. Many families leave a goodbye letter for Christmas morning.
What happens if you touch the elf?
In most families the elf 'loses' a bit of magic and doesn't move that night. A popular fix is sprinkling cinnamon next to it. Print our 'touched' letter to reassure your child.
What if I forget to move the elf?
Use an excuse: it was snowed in, it stayed to watch over a sick child, or it loved the spot. See our list of 12 excuses.
Can the elf move between two homes?
Yes. Many co-parenting families say the elf's magic lets it travel with the child, or that each home has its own elf helper.
At what age do kids stop believing?
It varies widely. Many kids figure it out between 7 and 10. Making them the elf's 'helper' for younger siblings keeps the fun going.
