Easy Elf on the Shelf Ideas: 10 Minutes or Less

Twenty-four nights is a lot of nights. These easy elf ideas are the ones we reach for on ordinary weeknights: every setup takes 10 minutes or less, uses things most homes already have (paper, toilet paper, toys, a mug, a book) and leaves no real mess to clean up before school.

Each idea below has numbered setup steps, the props you need, how long it takes and a short note your elf can leave. Bookmark the page, or use the generator at the top to pull one random easy idea for tonight.

Quick tips

  • Prep three 'emergency' setups on the weekend (a paper chain swing, a TP snowman, a hammock) and keep them in a bag by the tree.
  • Put a phone reminder at 9:30 pm called 'MOVE THE ELF'. Every elf parent forgets eventually.
  • Mix effort levels: easy on school nights, one bigger setup on Friday or Saturday.
  • Re-use props across nights: a candy cane from the zipline becomes a ski the next night.

FAQ

What is the easiest elf on the shelf idea?

Riding the ceiling fan (switched off), napping in a shoe, hiding in a coffee mug or hogging the TV remote. They take under 2 minutes and need no props at all.

How do I keep elf ideas easy all month?

Plan the 24 nights in advance with the free 24-day planner, cap school nights at 5-10 minutes, and keep a small bag of reusable props (candy canes, string, sticky notes, mini marshmallows).

Do easy ideas disappoint kids?

Rarely. Kids care most about finding the elf in a new spot and reading its note. A funny note turns a 2-minute setup into the highlight of the morning.
